Sleep Deprivation is people getting lack of sleep at time when sleep must occur . Instead of that we tend to sleep at some other time . Some people such as older adults seem to be more resistant to the effects of sleep deprivation, while others, especially children and young adults, are more vulnerable.

Facts on Sleep Deprivation:

  •     Newborns     (0-3 months): 14-17 hours each day
   
  •     Infants           (4-11 months): 12-15 hours
   
  •     Toddlers         (1-2 years): 11-14 hours

  •     Preschoolers     (3-5): 10-13 hours

  •     School-age  children   (6-13): 9-11 hours
   
  •     Teenagers      (14-17): 8-10 hours
   
  •     Adults             (18-64):  7-9 hours
   
  •     Older adults     (65+): 7-8 hours.

After around 16 hours of staying awake, the body attempts to balance the need for sleep. If sleep is thwarted, the brain obtains sleep through short sleep attacks (microsleeps).
Microsleeps will continue to occur despite an individual's forced attempt to stay awake, and because of this inbuilt sleep mechanism, it is extremely difficult for an individual to remain awake for more than 48 hours straight.

Causes of Sleep Deprivation

Voluntary Actions :

People who sacrifice their sleep just because to enjoy watching movies at late night , reading books , anything to do their hobbies probably sacrificing valuable sleep time. Use of alcohol  or caffeine close to bedtime, which can increase the difficulty to fall asleep.

Work or Study Commitments :

In the above lines it is stated that children and adults needs a good amount of sleep. But due to exam and time-line commitments from external environment , they probably have to sacrifice sleep.

Environment and Sleeping Habits:

This may include extreme temperatures, a loud neighbourhood, or sharing a bed with a partner that snores. New parents commonly experience sleep deprivation, as a result of needing to get up throughout the night to feed or care for infants or young children. Doing some physical exercise close to the bed-time.

       Prevention of Sleep Deprivation :

Some tips to get rid from Sleep Deprivation :

  •     Going  to bed when tired  
  •     Keeping  the bedroom quiet, dark and a comfortably cool temperature   
  •     Switch  off electronic items in the  bedroom   
  •     If  you are unable to sleep after 20 minutes walk for 5 minutes or else     shift to some other      room.
  •     Do  regular exercise

When you fail to sleep within your stipulated time , you will face the sleep debt problem . Just see to that you are balancing the sleep for those hours you did not sleep . Make sure you aren't carrying out to a prolonged time . If you had 2 hours less sleep today , manage to fill that 2 hour in the next days just extending your sleep  half-an-hour each day.
