Elevating the head while Sleeping :

While sleeping keep your head position elevated . You can add extra pillows to your head position in such a way that it lifts up . Now , your head position in the top which helps open up nasal airway passages and prevent snoring. Sometimes sleeping in this position can cause neck pain.


Avoid Alcohol

There are so many health problems is associated with the consumption of alcohol . If you have sleep apnea , definitely you must avoid alcohol. Alcohol is sedative and reduces the tone of muscle at the back of the neck and thus snoring occurs. If the people does not have snore also have chances of getting snore after the consumption of alcohol.


Quit Smoking

We all are aware of the fact that quitting smoking make our life easier and smoother. Tobacco smoke irritates the mucous membranes which cause the throat to swell up, thereby narrowing the airway. Smokers also develop problems of nasal congestion. It can act as a relaxant and allowing your throat to relax , thus making it to expand and blocking off the airways.

Practice good sleep hygiene

A good sleep can stabilize our metabolism in our health . Sleeping and waking up daily at a routine time makes our body health and fit . An irregular sleep can make your body fatigue , and when you fall asleep or go to deep sleep you may get snoring .

Narcolepsy is a rare long term disorder when occurs person suddenly falls asleep and the sleep may continue for several minutes to several hours.
 
Narcolepsy occurs when brain fails to balance sleeping and waking patterns normally .

Symptoms of Narcolepsy :

Excessive daytime sleep :

Feeling drowsy throughout the day , not able to concentrate in normal work . It is the first sign that occurs when a person is subjected to have Narcolepsy. Feeling drowsy all the day significantly impact the daily routine life . They fall asleep the whole day which in turn makes them inability to work in office or concentrate at school . Most often, people with narcolepsy are misjudged to be lazy or inactive or rude.

Sleep attacks

Falling asleep is normally found in narcolepsy affected person . It may occur at any time . They fall asleep during the day time . This sleep time may vary from person to person . Some people only have microsleeps lasting a few seconds. Some may have sleep for several minutes . If narcolepsy is not controlled then it sleep may occur several times for several minutes in a day .

Cataplexy

Most people who have narcolepsy may experience cataplexy . Cataplexy is the weakness of muscle or loss of muscle control.

People often isolates or withdraws from socialising with others .


Sleep paralysis

Some people with narcolepsy experience episodes of sleep paralysis . While waking or falling asleep people with sleep paralysis finds difficult to move or sleep . The episode can lasts for few seconds to several minutes. Since it is not considered that much harm but people finding difficult to move or speak can literally be frightening.

Hallucinations : Seeing or hearing the things that aren't real .

What causes Narcolepsy :

Causes of Narcolepsy is found to occur due to the lack of hypocretin (brain chemical ) . If a person has 90-95 percentage of lacking of hypocretin then the person is said to have narcolepsy than the person with normal level of hypocretin .

The lack of hypocretin is said to occur because the immune system mistakenly attacks the cells that produce it or the receptors that allow it to work.


Some of the other causes of narcolepsy :

Major depression or schizophrenia or hypomania.

Due to infections such as swine flu or improper medications to vaccinate such infections.

Hormonal changes during puberty.


Who is Affected ?

It is said to occur in the Childhood stage but often diagnosed during 20 – 40 age

Both men and women are commonly affected by Narcolepsy , but it is more common in men .

However, it's estimated the condition affects at least 25,000 people in the UK.

Probably it is considered a rare condition because many cases goes unreported often .

Many of us will feel fatigue or sleepy all the time when we don't sleep well during the last night or loaded with any stressful task in the previous day , because of which we fall asleep in the next day . This is a normal thing that we all undergo at least once in our lifetime or occasionally .

But those who are facing the problem continuously more than a week or a month then the person is said to have sleeping disorder . The cause of daytime sleeping disorder is associated with physical and mental health problems like dietary deficiencies, depression, diabetes, anaemia, or thyroid problems , chronic daytime fatigue can very likely be caused by a sleep disorder.

Excessive Daytime Sleep :

Excessive daytime sleep is defined as extreme chronic daytime fatigue. The person with EDS feels very tired during the daytime although they seemingly to get good sleep during the night .

Symptom of EDS :

Trouble Waking in the morning.

Lack of concentration.

Poor job performance.

Feeling sleepy throughout the day .

Loss of appetite.

Anxiety feeling

Dozing off during meals , in the middle of conversation or while driving.

Obstructive sleep apnea :

Obstructive sleep apnea is found in 20 million adults in U.S alone . Apnea means “cessation of breathing '' i.e. the person with apnea experience blocking of breathing periodically during the night sleep around 10 – 20 seconds a time and can continue for 100 times in a night .

Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by blockage of the upper respiratory airways in which the throat muscles collapse, the tongue falls back into the airways, or enlarged tonsils and/or adenoids impede airflow. During an apnea event the brain has to wake itself up to signal the respiratory system to continue functioning properly. Oftentimes people may not even realize they have OSA unless a concerned bed partner informs them of their nightly breathing interruptions.

Narcolepsy :

Narcolepsy is found 1 in 2,000 people . People with narcolepsy falls asleep during the daytime for several seconds to several minutes. It is an autoimmune neurological disorder often people struggles from maintaining the sleep or wakefulness cycle .The sleeps comes in people at two various stages NREM (Non rapid Eye Movement sleep ) and REM (Rapid Eye Movement Sleep )

The exact cause of narcolepsy could not be figured out . But it occurs due to reduced level of the neurotransmitter hypocretin , which promotes wakefulness . Around 90-95% of less hypocretin is found in a narcolepsy person than the person without the disorder .

They often sleep all the time during the day and bounded by sleep attack . They will get frequent sleep that lasts for several minutes a day .

Restless Leg Syndrome :
 
Restless Leg syndrome is a neurological disorder that causes that often urges to move leg continuously . Some of them experience crawling of the leg , unexplained pain in the body . To overcome this pain they shake their legs continuously . This will impact negatively on getting good and peaceful sleep . Most people with RLS report difficulty in to initiate sleep and maintain sleep .
