Insomnia is difficulty in sleeping . When a person troubles in initiating and maintaining a sleep , then for such type of mental illness is known as insomnia.

So , insomnia is due to the cause of inadequate sleep .

Facts about Insomnia :


Most of the adults would have faced insomnia at least one time during their lifetime . But generally who are chronically affected to it are often considered as Insomnia patients.

For a normal sleepless nights , more than 3 to 4 hours for 2 or days will be considered normal . The reason may be the person would have undergone a stressful day while carrying out day to day routine work . Insomnia is originally defined how long you are getting inadequate sleep in-spite you are stress less and having ample time to sleep .

The insomnia is defined as the trouble in initiating , maintaining a sleep despite having a lot of time to get sleep .


Classification of Insomnia :


Symptoms that are recurring less than a week are classified as transient insomnia.

Symptoms that occurs between two or three weeks are classified as short-term insomnia.

More than three weeks are classified as Chronic insomnia.

Stress most commonly triggers short-term or transient insomnia

Depression or anxiety or insomnia seem to correlated . People with anxiety or depression may get insomnia . Because often people with depression address lack of sleep .


All age group of people can be affected by insomnia . Females are most often affected than males

Typically occurs in most commonly with people having post- traumatic stress disorder , alcoholics , people do not mingle or socialize with public .


Symptoms of Insomnia


Some people with Insomnia most often tell they have problem getting asleep.

They often face daytime symptom such as

Poor concentration and focus

Accidents during driving because of fatigued and lack of sleep.

Withdraw from a social interaction.


Causes of Insomnia


Some of the causes of Insomnia for both short-term and transient insomnia :


Long flight travel through a different time zones .

Changes in Work shift .

Stressful situation ( Exam preparation , unemployment , divorce , separation from loved ones etc.)

Unpleasant environment or excessive noise.

Room temperature (too hot or too cold)


Mental Causes of Insomnia :

Depression
Anxiety
Stress
Mania
Schizophrenia


Physical Causes of Insomnia:

Chronic pain
Chronic fatigue
Obstructive sleep arena
Nocturnal Asthma
Brain trauma


Certain Medications also causes Insomnia


  • Prescribed medications for upper respiratory congestion.
   
  • Medications prescribed to treat asthma
   
  • Steroid medications to treat inflammation
   
  • Some medications used to treat high blood pressure.


Who is at risk of getting insomnia

Most often the people facing the above causes may have high chances of subjecting to insomnia.

Other than these the below listed people may also be affected by insomnia:

  •     Travellers
   
  •     Shift Workers
   
  •     Seniors
   
  •     Adolescents or young adult    
   
  •     Alcoholics    
       
Treatment for Insomnia :

People can seek for the treatment when they struggles with inadequate sleep for more than four weeks.

The main emphasis on the diagnosis of the insomnia is towards finding the reason for facing it . If the main reason for the insomnia is identified and cured can lead to the full and complete recovery . But knowing the cause of insomnia might be a difficult task . In majority of cases the insomnia can be treated completely by psychiatrist or psychologist .

The following therapies may be used in conjunction with therapies directed towards the underlying medical or psychiatric cause. They are also the recommended therapies for some of the primary insomnia disorders.

Generally, treatment of insomnia entails both non-pharmacologic (non-medical) and pharmacologic (medical) aspects. It is best to tailor treatment for an individual patient based on the potential cause. Studies have shown that combining medical and non-medical treatments typically is more successful in treating insomnia than either one.
